The Geosciences Suite, a DecisionSpace® 365 solution, is an innovative, collaborative, and integrated cloud solution that provides dynamic end-to-end workflows to help you characterize the subsurface with clarity. The solution is powered by iEnergy®, the E&P industry’s first dedicated hybrid cloud. The Geosciences Suite includes the unique Seismic Engine application that enables you to accelerate seismic attribute processing on volumes of any size by leveraging the cloud’s elastic scalability.

With the newest release of the Seismic Engine application, we offer not only a powerful geophysics workbench and the latest machine learning-based interpretation algorithms, but also enhanced data connectivity solutions. This makes Halliburton Landmark’s subsurface integration between energy companies and vendors simpler than ever.

This enhanced data connectivity and user experience come via unlocking support for the OpenVDS™ seismic data format. This integration delivers on our commitment to the OSDU™ Data Platform by providing geoscience technology access to seismic data available via a shared OSDU cloud environment.

Processing Integration

Seismic data is the key to all geophysical interpretations. Accessing seismic data on the OSDU Data Platform helps to reduce data loading cycle time and minimize storage and compute resources since duplicate copies of the data are no longer required. This is a win-win for turnaround time and resource conservation.

Figure 1 below shows a machine learning (ML) fault likelihood workflow where data is read via the OpenVDS application programming interface (API) into the Seismic Engine application. Discontinuity along dip is computed and then used as input along with the amplitude data to generate a ML fault likelihood volume. Results are then written back into OpenVDS format using the same API.

Tools such as Structure-Oriented Smoothing, FK Weighting, and FX deconvolution help pre-condition seismic data by eliminating noisy events and enhancing structural discontinuity prior to attribute computation. Bluware OpenVDS has been adopted as part of the OSDU Data Platform. OpenVDS is an open-source seismic data format for storing and accessing pre and post-stack seismic volumes. OpenVDS is compatible with cloud object storage and provides APIs for fast and random data access. Unlocking the stacked seismic access to this platform allows Seismic Engine to deliver up-to-date processing for workflows such as fault likelihood generation and automated fault interpretation. These processing workflows help improve the data for more accurate well placement and field risk assessment for all types of plays, in all scenarios. The workflow integration also achieves faster turnaround time, greater technology access, and improved user experience, which lead to better subsurface interpretations.

Visualization and Interpretation Integration

Halliburton Landmark has recently signed a collaboration agreement with Bluware, the developers of VDS™ technology. This agreement will enable Halliburton Landmark and Bluware to further enhance G&G workflows in the industry with the development of direct visualization and interpretation of VDS seismic data within Geosciences Suite and other third-party applications and solutions. This integration will complement our processing workflows, as data on the OSDU Data Platform will be used directly in the interpretation workspaces without having to go through any intermediate data loading.

Integrating seismic data on the OSDU Data Platform to the DecisionSpace® 365 workspace will also seek to enable geologists, geophysicists, and engineers to collectively make better decisions based on all available data types and interpretations. Adding this seismic data to the decision-making framework makes the system even more powerful as data can be dynamically updated when new seismic data on the OSDU Data Platform becomes available. Figure 2 shows the current and planned integration within the DecisionSpace® environment.

Enabling Halliburton Landmark’s DecisionSpace® 365 cloud applications access to the OpenVDS seismic data format can allow more geoscientists to leverage the latest digital technologies for more efficient processing and interpretation. This makes the Seismic Engine faster than traditional systems because of its ability to leverage dynamic cloud scalability. Subsequently, any processing and interpretation can be completed more quickly. This aids in a better understanding of the subsurface, which is vital to evaluating the potential viability of any reservoir.

Summary

If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it is the importance of being agile and efficient in the way we operate in the E&P industry. This requires our workforce to collaborate in real-time on a single evergreen source of truth that pulls data from multiple sources, that can then be efficiently and effectively processed and interpreted using intelligent and dynamic workflows. These new workflows will enable the creation of comprehensive subsurface models that help characterize the subsurface more accurately and reduce uncertainty.

Seismic Engine’s latest release unlocks access to OpenVDS and further facilitates integration with the OSDU Data Platform in the iEnergy cloud environment. Thus, the job of creating accurate interpretations of the subsurface is more efficient than ever.
