ABOUT THE WEBINAR
Myanmar is facing a shortfall in domestic energy and plans to meet the increasing demands by utilising offshore gas reserves. One such area of focus is the Rakhine Basin, where several multi-Tcf fields containing biogenic gas have been discovered and, if comparable to other Neogene deltas, may indicate the presence of tens to hundreds of Tcf yet to find. Despite this optimism, recent exploration has seen a roughly 50:50 split between success and failure and many license blocks have been relinquished — some due to lack of success, some due to the unfavourable terms of Myanmar’s oil and gas laws. The most recent licensing round was delayed, first while the government finalised more favourable exploration terms, then due to the recent pandemic. In anticipation of a licensing round being announced, we investigate the potential plays of this under explored basin. Particular attention is paid to the possibility of a thermogenic source rock, as well as assessing ways in which biogenic gas is found is such large quantities, despite generating before trap formation.
